Urucum (Annato) Oil Concentrate

The seeds of the Urucum (Annato) Tree (Bixa orellana L) are rubbed in heated vegetable oil to remove the pigments of the pericarp of the seeds. The oil is than sifted to remove the seeds. The Bixin extracted through the oily process consists of various colored compounds. The determinant compound is Cis-Bixin; the secondary compound is Trans-Bixin; thermal residues Bixin compounds may be present as a result of the process.


Solubility: Insoluble in water, little soluble in ethanol.

UV/VIS absorption: In acetone shows a maximum absorbance of around 425, 457 and 487nm.
